Low-fare airline AirTran Airways is making a return trip to Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport...

Low-fare airline AirTran Airways is making a return trip to Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport after a nine-year absence and will begin offering nonstop flights to Florida this summer.

AirTran's return will give passengers flying from McGhee Tyson competitive prices on destinations. It is the first major airline to come into the Knoxville market since low-fare carrier Allegiant Air began serving McGhee Tyson in December 2006.

AirTran joins Allegiant Air as the low-fare carriers serving the Knoxville market. In the past, McGhee Tyson officials have said low-fare carriers are vital to keeping air fares competitive with other cities and have noted that such carriers lower fares charged by all airlines serving Knoxville.

Among the cities served by AirTran out of its Orlando hub are New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
